Maria Salouvardou

I am an interdisciplinary Berlin-based artist, creating for the last 10 years sculptural installations of female bodies/costumes or shoes, combining scenography and performing art, with original music or video.

After attaining an Economics degree, I studied Acting (Vasilis Diamantopoulos and Akis Davis Theatre Schools), Costume design and Scenography (Micro Polytechneio), History of Art (Spanish Spoudastirio) and History of B&W Photography (PhotoCircle).

I was brought up in a conservative, oppressive, male-dominated family and society. This turned my focus on feminine energy, freedom of expression, female mythologies and our shifting place in the world. Knitting and embroidery become a ritual way to process unpleasant memories, traumatic experiences, and negative emotions in each story. I am a weaver, not only of threads but also of women's lives with the desire to overcome fear and achieve women's freedom on a personal or social level. Two of my recent projects focus either on femicides "No longer Hurt" or underage girls in enslaved service roles "Psychokores".

I create my own materials from used paper bags and plastic waste, using paper and 'textile art' techniques. The installations feature broken cables, threads, wires, papers, needles, glue, brushes, discarded plastics, broken toys, abandoned technology and more. My project "Dead Land", addressing Earth's burden from our plastics, has travelled from the Byzantine Baths of Thessaloniki to Berlin and to Barcelona, as the Drap Art Sustainability Festival main opening performance. In my poetry-inspired installation series visitors can experience concomitant audio voice narration, sounds, music with video projections or performance.

In my performances, conceptual goddesses or priestesses could be envisaged as messengers; in others, mortal women personify their stories with the poems—speaking to the public through threads that connect the installations like a web. My sculptures symbolise women's resilience, strength and beauty as a reply to a world strangled with inequalities, patriarchy, conflict and heedless consumerism.
